Hot dog day

We decided to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and the start of spring with a wiener roast. How were we to know that we were going to get a dump of snow overnight. We were not going to be deterred by a little bit of snow so a fire was built in the front play garden. Notice the rope around the fire pit, that is to remind us to stay back from the fire and we were reminded not to run around the fire. It is very important to be safe around fire.

We have a very efficient way of cooking many hot dogs at one time

Patiently waiting for the hot dogs to cook.

Some of us played in the snow while waiting for the food to be ready.
We were all getting very hungry.

Finally the food was ready!! The teachers put the hot dogs in the buns, poured the lemonade
and passed out the grapes.

All we had to do was enjoy the feast.

After we had finished eating we played on the ship.
There were many comments of how much fun was had and how good the hot dogs tasted.

The one, the only... Ms. Sonja

Ms. Sonja has been involved in teaching music at Discovery Children's Centre for years. Many of your children who have older siblings enjoyed her as well.
She is a trained Early Childhood Educator so she knows how to grab and hold children's attention of this age group.

This weeks session consisted of making children aware that their own bodies can make music and keep rhythm. They tapped their feet together while she played guitar.

She then introduced the concept of math in a very clever way using small white cups.
By using song, Ms. Sonja directed them to build a castle in a specific way.
"Three on the bottom, two in the middle, and one on top."

She learned this way of building a castle from another child and shared it with us.

For some it was easy and for others it was more difficult. All the children were very focused!

Next, she gave them bubble wrap. Bubble wrap works fine motor skills.
The children were encouraged to twist and turn to make it pop.
Some could make the popping sound and others popped one bubble at a time.

We always love when Ms. Sonja comes to visit because we learn while having fun.
These are great activities to try at home.
Let us know how they worked and your children may surprise you with a creative way to build a castle with cups.

What is the large muscle room?

Tuesday, March 1

We are thankful to have a large enough space to blow off some steam on the cold days when we have to stay inside.
The children are encouraged throughout the morning to try and save their big energy for the gym and large muscle room where they can run around, climb, jump, etc.
As you can imagine, the children love this time of day!

In order to maintain some sort of controlled chaos we have rules to follow.
We read them out before entering and continue to enforce them when needed to keep everyone as safe as possible.
After that it's pure fun!

Monkeys hanging from a tree.

Spiders climbing in a web.

"Look how high I climbed!"

The health benefits of large muscle play are so very important on a daily basis for general well-being and increased confidence.
We are glad to take advantage of it both indoors and out.

Thursday, March 3

Enjoy singing our new song to the tune of Frère Jacques.
